Offret is a solo ambient project from Kit Carruthers. It is a surreal, frightening, bleak and pretty examination of sound. The instruments used are a synthesizer, a piano, two violins, a cello, a harp, a harpsichord, a lute, a xylophone and a theremin. The albums that have influenced this project are Tim Hecker's "Harmony In Ultraviolet," Ben Frost's "By the Throat," Fennesz's "Venice," Deathprod's "Morals and Dogma," Biosphere's "Shenzhou," Deaf Center's "Pale Ravine," Harold Budd's "Lovely Thunder," Susumu Yokota's "Sakura," Christopher Bissonnette's "In Between Words," Alessandro Cortini's "Avanti," Loscil's "Monument Builders," Cities Last Broadcast's "The Humming Tapes," Philip Jeck's "7," Eluvium's "Talk Amongst The Trees," Steve Reich's "Music for 18 Musicians," Jóhann Jóhannsson's "Englabörn," My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless," Love Spirals Downwards' "Ardor," Ryoji Ikeda's "+/-" and Merzbow's "1930."
Offret is tied for my favourite project with O Beautiful Death but it is probably going to be your least favourite, philistine. This is about as pretentious as I can get.
If you haven't noticed, we are all drowning in reverb and distortion and have been for a long time now.
A certain haze has fallen over us.
Everywhere you go commercials are entering your brain. You can't stop it. You're just numb. You walk past flashing images and friendly voices selling you skin care products. It just washes over you.
You hear a man on AM radio spewing angry Christian rhetoric in a haze of grainy analog distortion. You calmly change the station and you do not think and feel a thing.
I enjoy putting it on ketamine. Think nothing, feel nothing. Go numb. Shut up and go numb. Take it.
Become the void. Become bleak. Become "nothing."
This is a little frightening, isn't it? If I weren't numb some of the noises coming out of this media box would be starting to scare me.
What did the TV say? Something about hellfire? My mind was elsewhere I'm in a bit of a haze.
Hm? What did it say? I spaced for a moment I'm on a lot of ketamine. Oh, it's 4:00 AM and I've been watching static for an hour, okay...
"Offret I" starts out playing with slightly melodic drones, I introduce pulsation in "Offret II" and it is basically nothing but pulsation in "Offret III." It always starts out with no melody and then gradually develops melody until it gets about as melodic as ambient gets on the last track. After these three albums I abandon the whole format, which I need to point out was the plan from the beginning just so you don't think I think it was stupid, start giving them titles, and just make whatever noises I feel like making at any particular time. Offret I through III are amateur and done without access to real actual people with real actual classical instruments.
"If it's All Over, Just Leave Already" is a mix of scary and pretty. "Mystery is a Fiction Genre Where the Nature of an Event Remains Mysterious Until the End of the Story" is all pretty. "They're Harvesting our Organs" is all scary. Still amateur, still no classical instruments.
Oh, I see what Offret is. Okay. I think Tim Hecker would like this, I've always known from the moment I listened to him back in 2004 or 2005 that this is what he and I feel but I don't know if he took it as far as I do. It may seem a little on the nose that I make you numb to scary noises but I assure you I went into this making the sounds my soul feels before I realized what this was. If you ever feel you need to ask if I intend to be on the nose the answer is no.
"The Offret Compilation" is the best of my early Offret work.
